My name is Ko Baas.
I live in the northern part of the Netherlands. On this site I tell you
something about my hobby, which is carving
netsuke.
Several years ago I wanted to start collecting netsuke. I found out that I
couldn't afford old ones. And the new ones I could afford I didn't like. So
one day I tryed carving them myself. At first with just a whitling knife but
I soon needed more tools. I bought some small gouges, veiners and V-tools and
adapted them for carving small objects. Also I made my own tools from
dental instruments. On the other pages of this site you can read more about
tools, materials and techniques.
I carve netsuke for about 7 years now. Almost every
evening at my desk in the living room. Always trying to improve my
skills and finding out new techniques.
I use pictures of old netsuke from books as examples. I'm
not trying to make exact copy's of old ones but I choose subjects which
apeal to me. Sometimes I make changes in the design while I am working on it.
Occasionally I sell a netsuke I made.
